The university suffered an irreparable loss!

On January 10, the rector of MSTU "STANKIN" Elena Georgievna Kataeva passed away from the consequences of coronavirus infection.

Elena Georgievna was a strong personality. Her openness, love of life, willingness to give all of herself to work, made every day of STANKIN bright and memorable. Elena Georgievna's competence and moral qualities amazed many of us. We went to her for personal advice, both as a wise woman and as a competent leader capable of solving any work issue. She took care of everybody like a mother, she managed to be a strict and demanding leader, and at the same time a kind and cheerful person.

For Elena Georgievna, there were no trifles. She lived at the university, loved it with all her heart. Students, teachers, alumni, employees and veterans of the university were in her care and daily attention. The news that she was gone echoed with pain in the hearts of all of us.

Elena Georgievna Kataeva began her career in 1979 at the Leningrad Polytechnic Institute named after V.I. Kalinin as a teacher of the Department of Automation and Computer Engineering. She taught students in disciplines such as theoretical mechanics, analytical mechanics, linear programming, and strength of materials.

Elena Georgievna worked as an assistant to the chairman of the Leningrad City Council, later as mayor of St. Petersburg. In 1992-1999 Elena Georgievna Kataeva worked in the staff of the Government of the Russian Federation, the Administration of the President of the Russian Federation. In 1999, she moved to RAO UES of Russia as the head of the department for work with government authorities, advisor to the Chairman of the Management Board, and in 2001 became Deputy Minister of Natural Resources of the Russian Federation, after which she worked for two years as Deputy Chairman of the Federal Commission for the Securities Market. In the period from 2005 to 2017, she was a member of the board of directors of the AlfaStrakhovanie group, the chairman of the board of directors in a number of the largest gas distribution organizations. Before moving to work at MSTU "STANKIN" on August 29, 2017, she was an advisor to the General Director of the State Corporation "Roscosmos".

Her work has been repeatedly noted by state, industry and departmental awards, among them: the Order of Honor, the Certificate of Honor of the President of Russia, the Certificate of Honor of the Chairman of the Government of the Russian Federation, the Medal "In Commemoration of the 300th Anniversary of St. Petersburg", the Certificate of Honor of JSC GAZPROM, diploma and gold badge of OJSC Gazpromregiongaz, badge "Honorary explorer of mineral resources".

With all her soul, Elena Georgievna believed in the revival of the domestic machine tool industry. Heading MSTU "STANKIN", she opened a new page of competencies and breakthrough ideas for the university. Elena Georgievna always said: "We must be on the frontier of the development of the engineering industry, scientific solutions and the training of highly professional specialists."

She was a true intellectual, an interesting conversationalist, possessed a brilliant intellect and great erudition. It will be impossible for all of us to imagine a university without her. This is a loss that is difficult to believe and impossible to accept. We express our most sincere condolences to the family and friends of Elena Georgievna. Blessed memory of this outstanding person!
